The eve of departure

Preparations are over. I have a few things left to pack still but my clothes are mostly hung; my socks are in a box and my kitsch is more or less tacked up in the cab of Roxanne. I even have my web address painted on the front and back of the camper, thanks to my brother-in-law. So, tomorrow is D Day and I think I am ready.

I admit that this all feels a bit surreal, the fact that I am actually leaving tomorrow. I mean, I think I will just have to believe it when I see it, because there was a time when I was not sure I was going to get out of here at all. I was supposed to leave July 16, also my 30th birthday, but I was still in Mexico at that time, trying to get over myself and just embrace what was out of my control.

Then I finally made it home and reality hit: I was here. And it was time to get everything ready for this trip. I remember having a quiet moment of panic when I realized that it was all for real now and I had to start carrying through on this plan of mine, and it reminded me of John Steinbeck, just before he embarked on his great road trip with his dog, Charley:

“In long-range planning for a trip, I think there is a private conviction that it won’t happen.”

But I am beyond that now and I think that I might, maybe, possibly, actually get off okay tomorrow— though I just knocked on wood, you know, to be safe and all. Anyhow, I am going to bed now and the next time you hear from me, I will be at my first stop.
